Abstract | In this work, some control strategies to manage municipal Waste Water Treatment Plants with Ludzack-Ettinger scheme, aimed to reduce the operative costs, maintaining the outflow pollutants concentrations under the legal thresholds, have been simulated. In particular, the procedures of a novel management policy involving both the nitrification and the denitrification processes, approaching as a preliminary step the Business Process Management Notation (BPMN) have been implemented. The case study concerned a fully instrumented conventional Activated Sludge (CAS) continuous flow pilot scale plant, fed with real wastewater collected by a near municipal small size WWTP. The mathematical model of the plant, used to simulate the different control strategies, has been implemented, calibrated and validated using the data collected on the plant. To control the nitrification process, a proportional-integral (PI) cascade controller (ammonia - dissolved oxygen), with fixed variable set point of ammonia concentration, has been used. For the denitrification process, instead, four internal recirculation flow rates values have been fully combined with the PI set-points defined for the nitrification process. To test all the management policies, involving both the control strategies, BPMN has been approached | |
